| Summary: | There is a positive relation between human rights and the media. The social function carried out by the media takes place in direct contact with the needs and demands of the citizens. The press plays a mediator role between citizenship and the fulfillment of human rights being the first one the right to be informed. Let us look at the journalistic task as a service to the common good: the means to form public opinion and social conscience, to spread and make known facts and to facilitate the exercise or the demand of rights as well as the «coercive capacity» of the media to publicize abuses. The informative task has its risks and malfunctions as we will see in the following pages. Existe una relación positiva entre derechos humanos y medios de comunicación. La función social que estos últimos llevan a cabo los coloca directamente ante las necesidades y demandas de los ciudadanos. La prensa juega un papel mediador entre la ciudadanía y el cumplimiento de sus derechos, el primero de ellos, el derecho a la información. Partimos aquí de la tarea periodística como servicio al bien común: las posibilidades de formar opinión pública y conciencia social, difundir hechos y facilitar el ejercicio de derechos o reivindicarlo, así como de la capacidad coactiva de los medios al publicitar abusos de violaciones. Todo ello sin olvidar ciertos riesgos o disfunciones producidas enla tarea informativa, que también veremos en las páginas que siguen. |
