Summary: | This article discusses Bishop Bell's relationship with the broad question of Europe during and after the Second World War. It finds that in Britain he was conspicuous in his repudiation of nationalism and his advocacy of a distinct ideal of Europe as a whole. Bell found its essential historical character in the Christian faith and in the continuing the reality of the Church. He also embraced the possibility of federal union. At the heart of this vision lay Bell's understanding of the controversial condition of Germany. Accordingly, the article explores Bell's relationship with the German Church in the context of internationa ecumenism, his connection with German resistance against the Hitler regime and his preoccupation with the fate of Germany in the context of the new Cold War. |
