Summary: | In its resolution 'Towards the renewal of the relations of Christians and Jews' in 1980, the synod of the German Evangelical Church in the Rhineland pronounced that in the foundation of the State of Israel the true God had spoken. This inspired a lively debate. If theological significance should indeed be attributed to political events, how might the dangers of a mistaken theological view of history be averted? In her contribution, the author argues how this can be done without becoming entangled in political and ideological realities on the one hand, or resorting to an abstract, and non-committal, theology on the other. In all of this the concept of Israel plays a central role and aspects of biblical-theological, historical, social, national and international thought come together. |
