Summary: | Many evangelical and charismatic-pentecostal Christians view the creation of the state of Israel in 1948 as the beginning of the messianic 'eschaton'. The 1967 occupation of biblically connoted territories in the West Bank eventually transformed the Jewish state into an emotionally charged place. In Germany 'Christian Zionists' have appeared, supporting the day-to-day realization of biblical promises of the conquest of Israel. Their notion of a Great Israel does not include the legitimate aspirations of Palestinians. Israel's basic acceptance of a coexisting Palestinian state, which revealed itself in the unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and from some areas in the West Bank, has plunged quite a few evangelical friends of Israel into a crisis. It remains an open question if the alleged threat to the 'divine plan of salvation' will drive Christian Zionism into the abyss of denying solidarity with Israel or if it will trigger a correction, based upon the new realities and fashioned in terms of a biblically and theologically sound self-enlightenment. |
