| Summary: | During the latter half of the 1920s an intensive antireligious campaign was undertaken through such newspapers for children as the White Russian Pioneer. This essay describes the profile of this newspaper and shows the kind of influence over popular opinion which such newspapers sought to promote in White Russian society at that time. Particularly such periodicals depicted the ideal image of the young Soviet pioneers, including their commitment to concepts of militant atheism. Also included are significant examples drawn from the newspaper, such as a so-called "Revelation" article, passages hostile to religion drawn from other literary sources, as well as cases of the successes and failures of the Young Pioneers in their daily struggle against the "opium of the people". |
