Resumo:Since the advent of the feminist movements of the 1970s, the themes, perspectives and debates of Women's and Gender Studies have increasingly made their presence felt in historical research. The significance of the construction of 'gender', meanwhile, goes far beyond pure 'Gender Studies'. This article is primarily concerned with the central category of all such analysis, the term race/sex/genus. The term is certainly more precise than that of gender, which involves cultural perceptions and kinds of awareness which may alter from one historical context to another. In the context of church history any such discussion draws upon religious conceptions and understandings. These inevitably require discussion. At a time where the Christian might ask what relevance religion has in one's own life, a theology which reflects upon these questions is called for, not simply to explain, but to justify. This article seeks to argue that a reflection upon the analytical term sex/race/genus may, in the context of the whole body of the Church, contribute to a new understanding of God´s history with His people.
