Description
Summary:At present internationalisation of science and of historiography and the expansion of the contents of those disciplines beyond the borders of the national state are important topics on the academic agenda. The demand for surveys of world history is growing. Moreover, even more narrowly conceived areas of research are increasingly geared to transnational questions and global contexts. This current boom of transnational and world historical perspectives is intimately connected with the fundamental economical, political and cultural processes of our present time. But it is also the result of empirical research which shows that thought and understanding in these global contexts is by no means new and confined to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries alone. The purpose of this article is to present selected examples from nineteenth-century questions and perspectives.
