Summary: | Bonhoeffer's fame as a theologian rests on his call for a new theology, as found in his Letters and Papers from Prison. In these letters to his friend Eberhard Bethge, Bonhoeffer began to overhaul and revise his previous theological positions adopted during the Church Struggle. Now he posits a wholly autonomous human condition which no longer needs any religious presuppositions. He also begins to spell out what a modern view of God must be - one that would be unmetaphysical and even atheistic in tone. He now saw earlier theologies, even his own in such works as Discipleship, as partaking in a now discredited western tradition of religious thought. These new insights have found great resonance in subsequent years in inter-religious or non-theistic discussions. So Bonhoeffer the prophet in fact reaches beyond his own earlier reputation, and his contributions as a theologian of the church struggle. His political courage and commitment are now linked with this new and exciting level of theological debate. |
