Description
Summary:The article describes different theological and sociologist approaches of recent studies about religion in the transitions of Central and Eastern Europe. Then it presents an explicit historical approach to explore the role of the two main Christian churches in former Czechoslovakia - the Catholic Church and the Evangelical Church of Bohemian Brethren - in the Communist era and in the time of 1989/90. Special attention is paid on the religious engagement in the civil rights movement Charter 77 and the religious impact on democratization and human rights. The thesis is that this engagement brought up a high civil competence which supports the democratization of 1989/90 as well as the development of the civil society after 1990.
