Summary: | Between 1934 and 1940 a series of student exchanges took place between the Hungarian Reformed Church's theological faculty in Debrecen and the Reformed Preachers' Seminary in Elberfeld, in the Rhineland, which was closely associated with the Confessing Church. Lásló Kósa looks first at the background as to how these contacts were established in the middle of the 19th century, and then quotes from reports written by the Hungarian visitors to show not only how they reacted to their stay in Germany in the mid-1930s but also what they thought about the on-going Church Struggle. The most significant figure was the Seminary's Principal, Dr. Hermann A. Hesse. But these reports also give a first-hand impression of political events in Nazi Germany. Several of these reports were, in fact, published back in Hungary, together with news about such figures as Karl Barth. So we can presume that Hungarian church members were able to gain a full impression of how they should judge both the political and the ecclesiastical events developing in Germany at the time. |
