Summary: | In the 1935 the Austrian Federation of Evangelical Churches established an Academic Association, as part of their response to the political pressures imposed on them by the Catholic government of the day. The result was that many Protestants sympathised with the National Socialists, and the Evangelical Federation indeed became the spokesman for a pro-Nazi and anti-Austrian viewpoint. But this brought these persons in some conflict with the Protestant church hierarchy, which after all was officially established and recognized. The Academic Association became in fact the pressure group of the Evangelical Federation, providing legal advice and services to persecuted Nazis, as well as preparing propaganda material for distribution. These activities were designed to bring pressure on the church authorities. The leader of this Academic Association was Robert Kauer, senior, who thus prepared the way followed by the whole Austrian Evangelical Church after the "Anschluss" of March 1938. In fact Kauer shortly thereafter became President of the Church's highest administrative unit, the Central Council. However, he then ran into difficulties with officials from Germany proper, and moved over to concentrate on his legal practice. The Academic Association went out of business shortly thereafter. |
