Description
Summary:Communist power in eastern Europe rested on force. So the Party's secret police exercised a significant role, and their privileges were unusually large. But with the overthrow of communism, society as a whole had to come to terms with this dictatorship. Such a painful process also affected the church, which had suffered, like all other social structures during this period of so-called Socialism, from an intense surveillance and infiltration by the secret police. Any clear picture of the church's role in these difficult and complicated times needs to remember how the communists' secret police functioned in relation to the churches. It should also take into account the parallel experiences of state supervision of church life in Czechoslovakia and Hungary, as well as in Poland.
