Description
Summary:August Adam (1881-1965) - not to be confused with Karl Adam (Tübingen) - was a prominent Bavarian Catholic moral theologian and religious educator. An unpublished manuscript from the years 1945-46 analyses the phenomenon of National Socialism, finding its roots to lie in Prussian militarism. This accounted for the continuity between the Kaiser's and Hitler's Germany. The only chance post-war Germany had to establish democracy was for the spiritual displacement of this unfortunate legacy. The Prussian myth (both its appeal to Frederick the Great and to the 1919 stab-in-the-back theory) had to be overcome. But Adam disagreed with those who looked for a "spiritual revolution". Rather, schools, universities and the press should re-educate their fellow countrymen. Part of the problem lay in the fact that the other regions, apart from Prussia, lacked a sufficient sense of Christian patriotism. Hence Prussian propaganda had filled the gap. So now it would be necessary to undertake an extensive programme of re-education in History, Philosophy and Ethics. In order to prove his anti-Prussian stance, Adam went so far as to adopt certain pieces of Nazi vocabulary when he attempted to show that there was a racial difference between a Prussian and a Bavarian.
