Description
Summary:A historical-sociological survey during and after the Second World War, Italian Baptists were faced with considerable difficulties, especially in carrying out their task of evangelization and their participation in the national reconstruction. They were therefore drawn after 1945 into asking for help from the American Baptists, which proved not unproblematic. In 1956, however, the Union of Baptist Churches was founded. Since Baptists have always campaigned for the separation of church and state, they joined with other Italian Protestant churches to call for the right of every individual to practise their own religion, and to protest the privileges enjoyed by the Catholics according to the Concordat. Already in the 17th century, Baptists had protested against any kind of state church, which strengthened their understanding of the theology of separation. In a free society, church and state should operate autonomously. Only after great difficulties did the Baptists achieve a new legal agreement with the state on 3 March 1993. As well as this campaign to achieve legal independence and recognition, the Baptist churches are engaged in theological explorations, in evangelization and in social work as they enter the third millennium.
