| Summary: | Religious festivals have rarely been studied as part of a culture undergoing serious changes. Their evolution after 1945 supports the thesis that they served to enhance and uphold the Catholic milieu in Germany, without raising questions about its political or social stances. After a peak in post-war activity, one can certainly detect a decline in the significance of such religiously-based cultural events. But at the same time, one can observe a continuous process of assimilation to other social developments, which has resulted in a certain acceptance of such religious feast-days as part of the wider social scene right up to the present. The record of how such religious feasts have been celebrated since 1945 shows a considerable variation between different parts of the country. So we cannot make too sweeping generalizations about the dissolution of the Catholic milieu. In some areas, these feast days, with their historical overtones, are still relevant events in society. We can say that these are examples of a religious tradition which has been continuous through all the traumatic political events of the past centuries. This leads us to conclude that religious festivals can only be studied adequately if a long term view of historical processes and of the formation of popular mental attitudes is adopted. |
