Description
Summary:This essay analyses the writings in the field of Catholic theology published between the end of the Second World War and the Second Vatican Council. We examine the different sorts of attempts to come to terms with the past as found in the theological discourses within the German Catholic Church, using the examples of Bernhart, Guardini and Wìnklhofer. All three were faced with the basic problem of Christian faith, namely that of theodicy. By comparing their responses we can see at least four major themes emerge: what is the relationship between the significance and attempts to master the immediate past and those of earlier periods, at least since the sixteenth century? Do these authors take seriously Nietzsche's contentions about Christianity's failure and the self-negation of God, or do they simply ignore these ideas? Does their answer to the question about the origins of evil remain fixed on the moral level, or do they see man's freedom as being involved in a more complex relationship to Creation and Salvation? Did they call for a re-orientation of the church as a whole or for a new definition of its tasks in the world?
