| Summary: | This essay describes the theological intentions and church-political aims of the pro-Nazi "Faith Movement of German Christians", or "Deutsche Christen" (DC) in the early years of the "Third Reich". In the first section the author sketches an outline of the events of the Church Struggle in the Lutheran Church of Hanover, showing how in 1933 the church authorities relinquished their statutory powers, leading to a major change of personnel at the top level. The background for this renunciation lays in the fact that these church authorities were being undermined by the attacks of the "German Christians", who sought to bridge the gulf between the church hierarchy and the laity, and to restore the lost relevance and significance of the church for the German Volk. National Socialism was seen by the "German Christians" as a chance to proselytise the whole German people. This can be seen in the analysis here undertaken of the opening of the Fourth "Landeskirchentag", or Church Rally, in Hanover in 1933. |
