Description
Summary:A small Catholic parish in the Saarland was the scene of a notable clash between two priests, whose biographies recall for us the wide differences existing amongst the clergy about the loyalty due to the Nazi state. On the one side Fr Hugo Pfeil represented a church still strongly influenced by the memory of the Kulturkampf against Bismarck, which clearly distinguished between God and Caesar, and refused to give the state more than it was due. As a result of his stance against the Nazi state, Fr Pfeil was sentenced to imprisonment in Dachau concentration camp. His replacement, however, Fr Hubertus-Kraft Count Strachwitz took a different view. He followed a more opportunistic nationalistic path of collaboration with the Nazi regime, seeking in fact a synthesis between the rival doctrines of the Church and the Party, and subordinating the church's autonomy under that of the nation. Such a view was tolerated by some of the bishops, or at least not opposed. But the resulting conflict led to considerable difficulties for Fr Pfeil after his release from Dachau and his return to this small Saarland village.
