Summary: | Given the background of a strongly entrenched Catholicism in Latin America, the present century has seen the development of a highly varied situation. On the one hand, there are strong moves to increase Catholic influence, either through a close connection between Church and State, or through church "base groups", which are trying to encourage a new kind of "popular Catholicism". On the other side, the "Catholic culture" of Latin America has shown itself to be so fragile and weak that protestant movements in the course of the last century have been able to attract numerous adherents. These protestant efforts at evangelisation have also tried to mobilise the inherent Latin American sense of "popular piety" for their own ends. The result has been a transformation of religious allegiances, rather than any growth of secularisation or even déchristianisation. |
