Description
Summary:The collapse of the east European dictatorships has given new impetus to research into the field of comparative dictatorships, which for so long was impossible for historical and political reasons. In this essay, I am less concerned with attempting to delineate the normative features of such dictatorships, which have been widely analysed as expressions of repressive regimes, opposed to the traditional western values of justice and democracy, despite their very different attempts to justify their existence. Instead, I attempt to pose certain fundamental questions about the common elements in modern dictatorships, which will enable us to study their pathology in a comparative manner. In particular I investigate the question of the "limits of power", and hence the subject of the opportunities for resistance. The role of the churches is of particular interest, since these institutions were continually impelled towards resistance in order to uphold their institutional autonomy, but also had to deal with limits, both internal and external, to their efforts. I seek to analyse the factors involved in the situations which can be collectively called: "Resistance in the German Twentieth Century Dictatorships".
