Description
Summary:The popular uprising of June 17th 1953 was an event of the greatest significance in the history of the German Democratic Republic. In the eyes of the Ministry for State Security and the leadership of the SED Party, these traumatic developments, as can be seen from numerous documentary sources, came to take on mythical dimensions. They also remained very much alive in the consciousness of the population. In the official histories of the GDR, these events were minimized with a few stereotypical and evasive circumlocutions, stating, for example, that the uprising was the product of a "fascist putsch". The demonstrations and strikes were explained away as having being organized from outside in order to sabotage the policy of the "New Course". But the GDR's history books gave no further details beyond these few "explanations". Similar approaches were adopted in those literary treatments which were allowed to be published in the GDR. But Stefan's novel "Five Days in June" which sought to give a more balanced picture, even though it did not contradict the official party line, remained unpublished until 1989.
