Description
Summary:One of the central problems of Marxist philosophy was its failure to develop any internationally acceptable standard of ethics relating to scholarly knowledge and enquiry. The need for such ethical guidance was recognised at the beginning of the 1980s by an interdisciplinary group of theologians, scientists and philosophers, including the author, who rejected the basic tenets of Marxism. They met for several years in the Church Research Centre in Wittenberg, even though they were infiltrated by agents of the "Stasi" who constantly reported on their activities. Here they worked out a more credible ethic, which was with great difficulties finally published under the church's auspices. The largely unknown work of this Wittenberg Working Group for the Study of Ethics can now be reconstructed thanks to the survival of the minutes, working papers and other writings of the members, as well as the reports sent in by the "Stasi" agents, and the various evaluations made by the Ministry for State Security.
