Description
Summary:In this article I argue that the Reich Church Government's Memorandum, as composed by Emanuel Hirsch, which discussed the basic relationship between protestant Christianity and political movements in effect disputed and denied the Reformation understanding of the doctrine of the "Two Kingdoms". I try to show that, according to Hirsch, politicians facing decisions must necessarily subordinate religious to political considerations, and therefore cannot admit the autonomy and independence of the Christian community. Secondly I seek to prove that Hirsch invalidated many of the important barriers and distinctions in this doctrine by seeking to sacralize the state and to profane the church, in order to suggest that a unified front between the political and the religious spheres could be established. My conclusion is that it was not so much the maintainance, as rather the sellout, of this important doctrine of the "Two-Kingdoms" which made large sections of German Protestantism so susceptible to the Nazi onslaught.
