Summary: | The Scandinavian or nordic churches have always regarded upholding their idea of being a People's Church (Volkskirche) and the practice of infant baptism, as a significant part of their pastoral tasks and an opportunity for service to their communities. It is important to note that even though the notion of a Volkskirche and the self-understanding of the Lutheran Church are not identical, nevertheless Lutheran doctrine includes important elements and aspects which justify the practice of infant baptism, and so gives rise to the concept of becoming a Volkskirche wherever this is relevant and responsible. This is connected with the understanding of baptism as the work, gift and promise of God, and from faith as being primarily grounded "in Christ". These ideas have deeply affected the ecclesiological geography of the Scandinavian churches. |
