| Summary: | The Catholic Church in the G.D.R. adopted policies on this issue, which, from a critical point of view, appeared to be contradictory. The G.D.R. required all recruits to the national army to take an oath of loyalty to the State, which was generally understood as an acceptable political step. On the other hand the oath taken at the time of the Youth Dedication Service was clearly ideological in purpose. The Church's opposition to the latter was always clear, but its stance on the former, as on the question of conscientious objection, was ambivalent. On the one side, the church wanted to deny the ideological legitimacy of the state, but on the other was obliged to recognise its factual existance by acknowledging its right to demand military service from its citizens. |
