Summary: | The small Catholic Church in the G.D.R. reacted towards the state-organized 'church policy' with calculated passivity. Although the strategy of public political restraint was not generally accepted in all its ramifications by different sections of the church over this forty-year period, the comparatively positive 'status quo' enjoyed by the Catholic Church in the socialist camp could be maintained and even expanded. By accepting the strategy of restraint from social activities in the politicized sphere, and from a certain fear of risking the 'status quo', a specific catholic identity arose out of the church's minority situation. Despite some deficits in the church's political strategy, this identity, along with the unity of bishops and their ties to the world-wide church, enabled the Catholic Church in the G.D.R. to maintain its standing versus the political aspirations of the 'socialist state'. |
