Description
Summary:For the first time, it is now possible to publish a document, dated 1957, from the papers of Erich Mielke, which describes the earliest interventions by the Ministry for State Security in the activities of the various provincial churches. Five weeks before this was written Mielke had been named as the chief of the so-called 'Stasi'. He was therefore seeking to provide his boss, Walter Ulbricht, with proof of his success. He could now report that several named leading representatives of the Church's bureaucracy were prepared to cooperate with the Ministry for State Security. This article outlines the highy tense and difficult relationship between Church and State in this critical year 1956-57. The original document, of which only one copy survives, describes in a very frank manner the opposition of leading churchmen to the policies of Bishop Otto Dibelius of Berlin, which was reputed to be bound up with these churchmen's own ambitions. For this reason these churchmen were led to take up relations with the Ministry for State Security, which had itself long been interested in such contacts. The activities of those individuals named by Mielke as 'Unofficial Collaborators' - some of whom are already known - can now be traced and compared with the researches undertaken by the Gauck Authority.
