| Summary: | Psycho-analysis has had a long, if troubled, connection with religious or church history, and led eventually to the development of religious and pastoral psychology as independent disciplines within the whole field of theology. Psycho-history could not be applied directly, but had to be complemented and rounded out through cultural and historical factors. I seek to give a survey of the various trends and schools in psycho-history as far as they dealt with religious or church history. Particular themes are presented as psyscho-history tried to establish itself as a part of historical anthropology or social history; for example, the relations between parents and children and their respective religious beliefs; the cultural, social and psychological significance of rituals; the psycho-social function of magic, anxiety and its overcoming and/or repression in religion and in the church; the psycho-analytical importance of church dogmas, religious asceticism and mysticism; Christian aversion to Judaism; and psycho-biographies of monks and theologians. |
