Summary: | It is clear that the ruling SED party in the former German Democratic Republic adopted different strategies in dealing with the established churches. The Ministry of State Securitiy's activities have to be put in the context of the policies of the state and party bureaucracies. The records of the Ministry of State Security contain files on the "unofficial collaborators" used to spy on the Catholic Church. A careful examination of these files shows something of the internal logic and the operations of the Ministry, but also requires a critical assessment of the criteria on which these files were accumulated. Any discussion about the alleged "collaboration" of individuals with the "Stasi" must first tackle the question of these files' reliability. Certainly we need to establish different categories, especially with regard to the Catholic church, which will then establish the extent of the alleged "collaboration" and go beyond the mere mentioning of names in the Ministry's indexes. |
