Description
Summary:Following the appearance of Dr. Schmutzler's autobiographical reminiscences about his term as Chaplain to the Student Christian Movement in Leipzig, Stephan Lipski gives his impressions from the point of view of one of the students involved, as a contemporary witness of these events. His report covers not only the developments fully described by Dr. Schmutzler but also those which took place amongst the students, especially in the History Department. He not only gives a description of the difficulties faced by the Student Christian Movement in the climate of deliberately cultivated atheism, as part of the situation of the Protestant Church in the 1950s, but also supplies details about the fate of individual students. His subjective impressions are reinforced by the use of the available official records, as well as by references to historical literature, which together provide a valuable source of information about the SED church policies in the University of Leipzig.
