Description
Summary:This article argues that both in the realm of politics and the media, the churches cannot be seen as neutral observers, but rather are actively engaged in both areas. This can be seen not only in the various theories about how the churches should relate to the media, but also in the churches' claims to the "relevant" in society. Certainly we are confronted with a situation when the media indulge in their favourite forms of sensationalism, seeking to reveal all. There are obvious dangers in a situation where we have a confusing surfeit of information mixed with entertainment. I argue the case that the churches' press and radio operations, just like secular journalism, suffer from a lack of responsibility, largely because critics from outside have never had to accept the burden of exercising responsible power itself. Journalists are fascinated, but also repelled, by the political arena, which leads to a very ambivalent relationship. My conclusion is that the inherent dangers can be limited by the journalists' capacity for self-control, which is certainly present. The churches can do much to rectify the defects of this lack of responsibility in political reporting and the deleterious effects of unbridled criticism of politicians through their exercise of pastoral care.
