| Summary: | Nationalism still forms the basis of existing constitutions as the search continues for credible sources of political loyalty. The author makes no secret of his view that too many expressions of chauvinistic nationalism were encouraged under the protection of a now discarded constitution. The new forms of political thinking, including the creation of a new constitution, need to ensure that all such unhealthy nationalism is excluded. So far this has not happened, as destructive ideas of national sovreignty are still being upheld, which leave no future for minority groups. Both the German minority and the Jews have clearly recognised this danger. Denominationalism, in its various forms, is still being practised in the dominant Roumanian church. Even though some sings of renewal can be found, the establishing church has not yet been willing to come to terms with its regrettable past. A truly Christian ecumenical spirit does not exist, and any prophetic 'turning to the Lord', as called for by Jeremiah, is still unheeded. Our western colleagues can help, not merely financially, but also spiritually, by extending their compassion but also their criticisms. |
