Description
Summary:During the 500th anniversary celebrations of the discovery of America, vigorous criticism has been expressed about this event and its consequences. For example, the original missionary impulse was carried out as a disastrous crusade against the heathen. In fact, the links between the conquest and its missionary enterprises led to very interesting results, as can be seen in a kind of Christian religion practised today in Latin America. Specifically, it produced a so-called "Cultura Popular" in religious life with quite special characteristics. After 500 years the result is a syncretism of catholic belief and elements of pre-conquest native Indian religions, which have been adopted by the dominant Catholic Church. Some of these elements, as found in Chile, are described in this article.
