Description
Summary:This essay offers a brief discussion, with no pretense at being a complete survey of the literature, of the relationship between social history and religious history in central Europe during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. After defining social history as an approach to the past, rather than in terms of a specific object of investigation, the first part deals with the usefulness of a social historical approach to the study of religion. It offers some examples of what has been accomplished and notes what remains to be done, particularly in regard to the history of the clergy, the role of women in the church and the place of religion in twentieth century German society. The second part turns the focus around, and points to the crucial importance of religion and the church for the study of social history, suggesting that any discussion of modern German society that does not take into account the activities of the churches or the relationship between the two Christian confessions is misleading and incomplete.
