Description
Summary:Contemporary church historians have to see their task as going beyond merely the history of theology. The Church is both a historical and a social phenomenon, as an institution intimately involved in the life of society as a whole. Church historians therefore have to recognize that their field of research must be closely related to analysis of the whole of political and social reality. Ignoring new methodologies adopted by historians in the secular field would result in a serious deficit. For example, the historians of ideas have successfully challenged the exclusive claims of Christianity as an explanatory tool for the whole of history. Instead they have shown that social consciousness (l'histoire des mentalités) is a body of ideas, in which theological deductions may be either adopted or rejected. 'Grass-roots' history (Alltagsgeschichte) describes the whole range of experiences in history, from the point of view of the individual who may be either actively or passively involved. But it also shows that far-reaching political decisions are influenced by the secular context of daily life, which is usually treated as irrelevant in macro-historical analyses. But if these factors are not sufficiently taken into consideration, misinterpretations can arise.
