Summary: | Professor Klaus Scholder was a very gifted and capable theologian whose sober judgement and eccelesiastical engagement were highly esteemed. As a historian he published a critical evaluation of the role of the Churches during the period of the so-called Third Reich, underlining the fundamental importance of the Barmen theological declaration of 1934 in charting the course to be taken by the Protestant churches. As a result of his reflections on this significant document, Scholder engaged himself in contemporary political affairs, especially in promoting reconciliation and co-operation with the countries of eastern Europe. It was primary interest in theology which led to this concern and commitment to an active political career, as he explained in an important dialogue with Helmut Gollwitzer. |
