Description
Summary:Three different examples of the awareness of guilt can be seen in German Protestantism's view of history during the 20th century: the questioning or war guilt after the First World War, the confession of guilt during the Third Reich and after the end of the Second World War, and the contemporary discussion concerning church and theology relating to the recent changes in East Germany and eastern Europe. On the one hand there is a moralistic point of view: Christians are obligated to get rid of the burden of the past by adopting an entirely different stance in order to avoid further occasions for doing wrong. On the other hand there is an attempt to understand the confession of guilt before God as a precondition for the churches' duty to proclaim the message of atonement and reconciliation in the spheres of personal life and public affairs. The impact of these two approaches on the Church's understanding of history, and its theological reflections on these events, are here discussed.
