Summary: | This essay has been prompted by reflecting on the task of attempting to overcome Germany's culpable past during the Third Reich and in more recent years. Some historical situations are depicted in Luther's career, when he had to comment on the mastering of sin. On these occasions it was important to him that human beings acknowledge themselves as sinners before God, so that God is able to forgive mercifully. This is the meaning of the formula „sinner and justified at the same time". Confession of sin and the intercession to a merciful God are inseparably connected. But forgiveness, in Luther's view, is stronger than sin, as can be seen in his exegesis of relevant biblical passages (1.John 1:18–2:2; the psalms of atonement, Gen. 45:5 and 50:15–21). Only after purifying the relationship between the sinner and God are results in the interpersonal sphere possible. |
