Description
Summary:Since 1970 a theological dialogue has been taking place between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. The initiative was taken by the Finnish archbishop Martti Simojoki in 1964. The dialogue should be seen in the context of increasing worldwide ecumenical activity in the period immediately before. Seven times peace has been one of the themes under discussion. Beside concrete concerns such as the need for global justice and nuclear disarmament, in the concluding notes resulting from different consultations special attention has been paid to the theological motivation for peace. It is stressed that for both sides peace is not only a matter of social ethics but one of dogma, in the orthodox tradition one even of central importance. In both churches peace with God is considered a presupposition for the peace work of Christians, but there is a difference in the understanding here of the word "presupposition". In orthodox theology the word refers to the Gospel as both power and ethical norm, whereas in Lutheran theology the Gospel is understood as power but the law provides the ethical norm for peace work. Among other things these discussions on peace have shown the need for further conceptual reflections.
