Description
Summary:The problem of the reunification of the two German states was one of the most important issues in the discussions of the joint synods of the EKD in the 1950s. Apart from the protestant Kirchentage these synods provided the last platform of German-German dialogue in the era of the Cold War. Since the foundation of the EKD 1948, the „German question“ dominated the debates of the EKD-synods until the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 separated the East German churches from their West German partners. This article also documents the controversy in the late 1950s between two prominent synod-members - Eugen Gerstenmaier (CDU), the President of the German Bundestag from 1954 until 1969, and Helmut Gollwitzer, the representative of a critical protestantism — over the failures of Adenauer's Deutschlandpolitik. After the building of the Berlin Wall, the EKD-synod accepted pragmatically the existence of two German states and concentrated its activities on the problems of the Third World or the need for reconciliation with Eastern European countries, especially Poland. These deliberations can be seen as providing one of the more significant bases for the later Ostpolitik of Willy Brandt.
