Description
Summary:The pogrom activities on and after 10 November, 1938, initiated by Goebbels in accord with Hitler, brought deep suffering and dire need for the whole Jewish population in Germany. What disturbed citizens and churches most was the fact of juridical insecurity. Persecuted persons were given no protection by police and courts of law whenever those in power so decided. National socialist party organizations suspected the churches of complicity with the Jews and of disloyalty to their own country. In fear of terror, the majority of the church members and church leaders were silent to the pogrom. The different possible reasons for such passivity should be clearly distinguished. Racial anti-Semitism had little influence within the churches. More important was a religious opposition, namely the traditional protestant anti-Judaism. But the decisive factor was a socio-cultural opposition against Jews. German Jews had been the avant-garde in the modernization of society which Christian conservatism, especially neo-Lutheran theology, considered to be a decay of God-given „orders of creation". Where these three motivations concurred, the effects were disastrous.
