Description
Summary:The genesis of Bonhoeffer's essay „The Church before the Jewish Question” shows that its central issue was a consideration on the relation between church and state in the new situation after Hitler took office. He chose the actions of the new rulers in dealing with the pretended Jewish problem as the key issue for a theological and ethical judgement on the new state and its politics. Bonhoeffer didn't want to explain his personal judgments on the potential ways of „resolving” the issue concerning the Jews, but he saw the Aryan Paragraph of April 7, 1933 as a characteristic and illuminating expression of the new state's self-understanding which would result in conflicts with the Christian doctrine of state and law. This is the case, when the state becomes a medium for reaching racial goals. There was a fundamental struggle between an understanding of state and law in a liberal tradition and the new concept of law and state which saw them only in service of race and people's community and which didn't accept any indelible rights of the individual. In this conflict, Bonhoeffer, like his brother-in-law, the professor of public law, Gerhard Leibholz, defended the fist one. Leibholz, and also Bonhoeffer, wanted to preverse the „liberal heritage of the last centuries”, namely separation of powers, protection of minorities and indelible rights of the individuals. Furthermore, Bonhoeffer began to develop a new understanding of Jewish and Christian believe in the Messiah in the year 1933, because of the common threat to them by the „political messianism” of National Socialism.
