Summary:The following report on “religion in the news” in Japan from late 2006 through 2007 is a translation of a report published in Japanese as「消費社 会の〈宗教〉:スピリチュアルブームの陰で」in the pages of『現代宗教』[Gendai shūkyō] 2007, a journal published annually by the International Institute for the Study of Religion. It is based on the database of the RIRC (Religious Information Research Center) and on information culled from newspapers, journals, and specialized religious publications. As in previous years, the author has kindly consented to allow us to translate her report into English in order to provide information on the current state of religious issues in Japanese society.
