Description
Summary:The following is an English rendering of a paper delivered at the Fourth Symposium of the Doi Michiko Foundation for Kyoto Philosophy, held in Kyoto from 16 to 18 December 2002. The spirited discussions of those days made me conscious of the many limitations of what I have written and raised questions I had only dimly thought about before. It would take too long to satisfy the demands of a rewrite and I therefore present it as is in the hope that others may find some stimulus to think about the questions it raises.
