Zij weegt en weerlegt exegetische tegenargumenten en toont vervolgens aan dat in de oudste bron, het evangelie van Markus, de term discipelen niet alleen inclusief gebruikt wordt, maar vrouwen bovendien als voorbeeldige discipelen in beeld zijn. Voor haar conclusie dat het historisch gezien plausibel is om vrouwen onder de discipelen te begrijpen, boort De Boer naast de nieuwtestamentische teksten andere bronnen aan. Op grond van vroeg-christelijke geschriften waarin vrouwen expliciet discipelen van Jezus worden genoemd, en gebaseerd op recent onderzoek naar de historische situatie en positie van vrouwen in jodendom en christendom, laat zij zien dat het door Schüssler Fiorenza geïntroduceerde 'leerlingschap van gelijken' niet een kwestie is van een andere manier van historische verbeelding maar van historische realiteit. | ||

De Boer also refers to extra-canonical texts in order to show that historically speaking, it is plausible that the women are included in 'the disciples'.
