Summary: | This article first highlights the major changes in ecumenical relations between the Lutheran and Roman Catholic churches over the past century, culminating in the 1999 Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification. Second, perspectives for future consensus agreements are discussed, especially on the Lord's Supper, ecclesiology, and ordained ministry. Third, the assertion of a fundamental difference (Grunddifferenz) between the Lutheran and Roman Catholic churches, as argued for example by Eilert Herms and Karl-Heinz Menke, is critically evaluated. Fourth, the ecumenical implications of the new controversial debates on the theological understanding of human freedom are addressed. Fifth, and finally, it examines visions of the "visible unity" of the church(es). |
