Description
Summary:Augustine’s work, The City of God (=ciu.) is a work particularly rich in material for studying Augustine’s arguments against his opponents. The focus of this paper is his refutation of opponents whom he accuses of pride (superbia). It is not just due to their lack of humility (humilitas), but to their lack of acknowledgement of the importance of the life of Christ who embodied this virtue. Two of his targets in ciu. are of interest to explore here: the first are the proponents of ancient Roman religions which include Roman emperors; the second are pagan philosophers, such as Porphyry. This predominantly descriptive paper is unique inthat it weaves together different aspects of Augustine’s thought on pride: his doctrine of the image of God with his perspective of demons in his refutations in ciu.
