| Summary: | This essay aims to present the treatise, at present almost unknown, En defensa de nuestros Mártires de Japón (1628), and its author, the Biscayan Jesuit Juan Bautista Poza. The codex is a critical writing, as it is typical in the works of the polygraph, which provides information and quotes from theologians and moralists. This work analyzes, first of all, the attitude to be taken by Jesuits during the persecutions while the evangelization of Japan in the late sixteenth century. Specifically, the treatise is a proposal that the Holy See recognizes the beatification of the martyrs of Japan, and begins from the requirements expressed by the missionaries. Some of them were boldly exposed to death, others went into hiding in order to continue evangelizing and Christianizing the Japanese gentiles. Poza urges the ecclesiastical authorities to support a proper and thorough evaluation of each European martyr who left his life for the faith and Christianity in the Land of the Rising Sun. El presente ensayo tiene como finalidad dar a conocer el tratado, casi desconocido hasta el presente, En defensa de nuestros Mártires de Japón (1628) y a su autor, el jesuita vizcaíno, Juan Bautista Poza. El códice es un escrito crítico, como es típico de las obras del polígrafo, que brinda abundante información y citas de teólogos y moralistas. En él se analiza, principalmente, la problemática sobre la actitud que había que tener ante las persecuciones en la evangelización de Japón a finales del siglo XVI. En concreto, el tratado es una propuesta para que la Santa Sede reconozca la beatificación de los mártires de Japón, y nace a partir de las disposiciones manifestadas por los misioneros. Algunos se expusieron audazmente a la muerte; otros decidieron esconderse con el fin de seguir evangelizando y cristianizando a los gentiles nipones. Poza exhorta a las autoridades eclesiásticas para que admitan una correcta y minuciosa evaluación de cada mártir europeo que dejó su vida a favor de la fe y de la cristianización en la Tierra del Sol Naciente. |
