Summary:«Well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter […] in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome […] will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked». This surprising words of Benedict XVI, announced on 11 February 2013, have situated all of us in front of the possibility of the Petrine office resignation, as well as the essential elements to be valid.
«Siendo muy consciente de la seriedad de este acto, con plena libertad, declaro que renuncio al ministerio de Obispo de Roma, Sucesor de San Pedro […] de forma que, desde el 28 de febrero de 2013, a las 20.00 h. la sede de Roma […] quedará vacante y deberá ser convocado […] el cónclave para la elección del nuevo Sumo Pontífice». Estas palabras inesperadas de Benedicto XVI, pronunciadas el 11 de febrero de 2013, nos han situado a todos ante la posibilidad de la renuncia al oficio petrino, así como ante los elementos necesarios para que ésta sea válida.
