| Summary: | This article first explains the nature of the Jesuits’ global civilizing mission as a key feature of their institutional character. Since 1990 the concept of «Indies in the old country» or Internal Missions has been one of the leading interpretative categories in the historiography of European Early Modern Catholicism. The great number of records, attests a strong activity in the former Jesuit stronghold of Castile from the second half of 16th century. The action undertaken by Jesuits in Castile demonstrates the role played by internal missions in regard to the articulation of their society, in accordance with the patterns of behaviour and the models of political organization of this period. Se intenta explicar, en primer lugar, la naturaleza y el contexto de la misión civilizadora universal de la Compañía de Jesús como concepto clave para entender también su carisma institucional. Desde la década de 1990 el concepto de «Indias de aquí» o «misiones interiores» se ha convertido en una de las categorías interpretativas más interesantes para el catolicismo europeo de la Edad Moderna. La abundancia de fuentes testimonia una gran actividad en la antigua provincia jesuítica de Castilla a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI. La acción emprendida por los jesuitas demuestra el papel jugado por las misiones interiores en la articulación de la sociedad, de acuerdo con los patrones de conducta y el modelo de organización política vigente en aquel periodo histórico. |
